A system to reduce operating costs and CO2 emissions and increase revenue from power trading

ÖREBRO, 2026-10-19: E.ON Örebro has chosen Energy Optima 3 from Energy Opticon as its decision support system for the economic and environmental optimization of Örebro’s energy system. The system also covers optimization of the company’s participation in the electricity markets.

With Energy Optima 3 Private Cloud, E.ON Örebro aims to make operational planning more efficient and secure, optimize production and respond quickly to changing electricity prices. The platform also makes it possible to trade actively on several electricity markets, such as Day-ahead, Intraday and mFRR.

The system is a key component in keeping operating costs as low as possible. This in turn contributes to high security of supply and competitive district heating prices for customers in Örebro.

Initially, district heating, electricity and district cooling are being optimized. In recent years, electricity production has gone from being a profitable by-product of district heating production to a central part of the business, which places higher demands on trading optimization.

“For us, Optima is considerably easier to maintain than our previous system, and it is easy to get help when we need it. We now have a solid foundation in place with all the functionality we had in the old system. Together with E.ON’s other production sites in Sweden, we see great opportunities to develop even better support for power trading optimization and communication with the power traders.”

— Agneta Bäckman, Optimization Engineer, E.ON Örebro

Previously, E.ON Örebro used an optimization system that required a great deal of in-house time for system maintenance and development. With Energy Opticon as its supplier, the company expects stronger support in these areas.

“Electricity production has gone from being a profitable by-product of district heating to a central commodity on the day-ahead, intraday and mFRR markets. The optimization software therefore plays a very important role in our trading. What stood out during the evaluation was the ability to communicate with the power traders – now we bring usage and communication together in one and the same system.”

— Håkan Lindgren, Operations Manager, E.ON Örebro

ABOUT E.ON ÖREBRO

E.ON’s energy system in Örebro is centered mainly on the large-scale district heating network, with the Åbyverket plant as its hub, along with the introduction of innovative and smart energy solutions.

  • • Åbyverket: One of Sweden’s largest biofuel-fired combined heat and power plants, producing approximately 1,000 GWh of district heating and 300 GWh of electricity annually.
  • • Interconnected network: The district heating network is connected with the neighboring municipalities of Kumla and Hallsberg, creating a robust regional energy system.
  • • Sustainable fuels: The system is being converted from fossil fuels such as oil, coal and peat to renewable sources such as wood chips and bio-oil.
  • • Flexibility: At Åbyverket, E.ON is building a 62-meter-high accumulator tank that stores hot water. The tank works like a giant battery, storing energy when production is high and delivering heat to the network during cold peaks.
