Our Pia Malmström Lawson and Energy Opticon AB ’s CFO Moa Dahlman Truesdale have spent two great days in hashtagPrague, participating in the Swedish-Czech Decarbonization Forum held at the Swedish Embassy.
We had the honour to be a part of a specialist hashtagpanel about Large-Scale Energy Systems & Infrastructure, alongside David Martinek from ČEZ ESCO, Tomas Caha from Exergie.CZ, Jenny Jamot from Alfa Laval and Šimon Falta from IQstat .
Our key take-aways from the challenges and opportunities for decarbonizing and evolving the Czech energy systems:
◾ Challenges in the Czech Republic due to high dependency on gas. With new investments and diversity in the production system, complexity has been increasing. Improved digitalization and total optimization instead of sub-optimization is needed. Find ways to keep district heating and electricity prices competitive.
◾ In a conservative energy business, there are not many incentives for innovation.
◾ Utilities must be ready for participation on multiple trading markets with 15 min time steps.
◾ Plan for future scenarios instead of only thinking short-term. Important to prove economic viability for new investments long-term, with changing regulations and prices.
◾ Focus on what’s best for the specific, local energy system. The latest trends must not necessarily be the most optimal.
◾ More collaboration between European countries. Knowledge-exchange, site visits and technology collaboration. Find well-proven solutions and innovations. Countries like Sweden has done the decarbonisation journey, learn from our experiences and don’t invent the wheel again.
◾ Building efficiency and flexibility – energy efficient solutions must be a part of the initial phases of construction planning of new buildings. Often these solutions get down-prioritized in the budget due to lack of knowledge or interest.
◾ Waste heat utilization and heat pumps have a high potential and could be used much more, but high demands of return of investment sometimes hinder this development. Good business and price models for sector-coupling are important for new commitments.
Thank you to Hana Burešová and Vitaliy Tsvyntarnyy from Business Sweden for inviting us to this well-organized and interactive event, to Adam Čermák from Svaz moderní energetiky for being a great co-moderator and also to Håkan Jevrell, the Swedish Embassador in Prague, for being such a welcoming host.
We highly appreciate all the interesting and open discussions with the participating energy companies, such as ČEZ ESCO , ENETIQA a.s. , TEDOM energie , Teplárny Brno and E.ON CZ
We’re looking forward to future Swedish-Czech collaborations!
